MA/PhD Admission

Our admissions committee is looking for candidates who have a strong record of academic achievement, and who show evidence of an emerging research agenda. The application will have a greater chance of success if those research interests are well matched to our faculty’s areas of specialization (please see faculty web-pages and examples of scholarship).

Application Process
The department admits students to the MA/PhD track or directly to the PhD program; it does not admit MA-only candidates. Students entering with an MA or an MFA may apply graduate credits earned at other recognized graduate institutions if the coursework was taken as an enrolled, graduate-degree seeking student and the credits appear on the official graduate school transcript. Graduate students are admitted for Fall Semester only.

We will begin accepting applications for Fall 2009 after September 1, 2008 with a final deadline of January 5, 2009. Students must apply to both the Department of Theatre Arts and Dance and the Graduate School of the University of Minnesota. For more information, see the Application information section of the Graduate School web site. The application should be accompanied by a current resume, statement of career objectives, and three letters of recommendation. The Graduate School requires an online application. The Theatre Arts program also requires their own Application for Specific Degree Programs, which includes instructions for providing additional required materials.

Funding
We admit only a small number of students each year, and make every effort to fully fund their studies for up to four years through Fellowships, Teaching and Research Assistantships.

Prerequisites
The prerequisites for admission are as follows: a minimum of 18 undergraduate credits or the equivalent in theatre, dance, performance studies, or a related field; a 3.0 grade point average; and a U.S. Bachelor's degree or comparable foreign degree from a recognized college or university. International students: TOEFL scores must be submitted by January 15 (The Graduate School operational standards for admission on the new Internet Based TOEFL (IBT) is a minimum total score of 79, plus section scores of at least 21 on the writing section and 19 on the reading section.)
