Curriculum and Training
The core curriculum is designed as a five year program. It consists of two parts: Part I – coursework (three years); and Part II – research and dissertation writing (two years). The three years of coursework are tailored so that the first two years are more structured, and third and final year is more open, allowing students to pursue their individual areas of interest in more depth. In addition to these course requirements, students must also take coursework in a supporting program or minor field (12 credits), 24 thesis credits, and demonstrate proficiency in a foreign language.
The program places a strong emphasis on preparing students to enter the academic profession. Students are trained in undergraduate pedagogy through workshops associated with Teaching Assistant assignments, and through ongoing mentoring by faculty. And as students advance in the program, they are encouraged to develop and present papers at regional, national and international conferences. These efforts are usually financially supported with fellowship grants.
